Push Notifications

To receive Push Notifications, all Business On Line Users and Administrators must enable notifications for the Approve App in their registered device.

The Approve App is currently used to generate one-time codes for Business On Line. Soon, you’ll also be able to approve or decline Payments or Payee authorisations using secure Push Notifications delivered to your registered device.

When you log in to Business On Line throughout April and May, we’ll display messages to let you know when Push Notifications are ready to use in the Approve App.

Please review the features and benefits of Push Notifications along with FAQ’s below for more information.

  • What is a push notification?

A push notification is an important notification we send to your Approve App to securely approve or decline certain authentication requests.

Push notifications are required to complete the following instructions on Business On Line:

    • User activation
    • Add a payee
    • Authorise a payment (single payments)
    • Authorise payments to Payee Groups (applies to EFT/BACS bulk Payee Groups only).

The following activities will not require a push notification:

    • Logon
    • Administrator set up
    • Add payee to Payee Group (applies to EFT/BACS Bulk Payment Groups only)
    • Authorise an Import Bulk Payment
    • Stop a cheque.
  • I did not get a push notification on my device — what should I do?

    Please check that:

    • Your device is connected to the internet (Wi-Fi or mobile data must be enabled)
    • Notifications are turned on for the Approve App
    • The ‘Do Not Disturb’ setting on your device is not blocking notifications
    • To open Pending Requests in your Approve App, tap the three dots/lines in the top right corner of your App

If you still cannot receive notifications, please contact our Helpdesk here for support.

  • Apple / Android device – push notification settings

Push notifications are required to approve or decline authentication requests. If you’re not receiving notifications, here’s how to turn them on.

Android App notification settings are controlled through your device settings.

    Android device steps

    1. Open Settings on your phone
    2. Tap Apps
    3. Find and select Approve in your list of apps
    4. Tap Notifications. Turn on Allow notifications
    5. Under notification types, ensure Lock screen, Badge and Pop-up are allowed
    6. Select Lock screen notifications – Select Show Content to view push notification alerts when your smart device is locked
    7. Select Notification categories - make sure categories like General, Alerts or similar are enabled.

Apple IOS provides app specific notification controls.

    1. Open the Settings app
    2. Tap Notifications
    3. Go to Approve App
    4. Toggle Allow Notifications ON
    5. Enable the desired alert types:
      • Lock Screen
      • Notification Centre
      • Banners
    6. Set Banner Style to persistent
    7. Optionally enable Sounds and Badges.
  • Where can I see Pending Requests in the Approve App?

If you have not received your push notification, you can view pending requests in the Approve App by selecting the menu (three dots/lines) in the top right corner of your App screen.

  • Do I need push notifications to log in to Business On Line?

No. To log in to Business On Line you will require a Secure Code from your Approve App.

  • Can I opt out of push notifications?

No. Push notifications are required to authenticate certain activities when using Business On Line. All customers are required to have a smart mobile device to download the Approve App and receive important push notifications.

  • Will push notifications replace the need for Secure Codes?

No. While many activities will now generate a push notification, prompting you to swipe to approve or decline activities for added convenience and security, some may still require a Secure Code.

Business On Line will clearly show on screen whether a Secure Code or push notification is required to complete an activity — simply follow the steps presented.

  • Do I need a push notification to authorise bulk payments?

Bulk payments to Payment/Payee Groups in Business Online will require a push notification to either approve or decline the payment.

Authorising Import files will continue to follow the existing authentication process.

  • If I am an approver for multiple companies, will requests appear separately?

If you have multiple User services registered in your Approve App, you will receive push notifications for the specific User associated with each action.

  • What happens if I do not approve or decline a push notification?

If no action is taken, the request will time out and you will need to restart the authorisation process.

  • Will I still receive push notifications if I do not have a valid network connection?

No. Your smart device needs an internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data) to receive push notifications to use the Approve App.

If you are not receiving notifications, check that:

    • Your Wi-Fi is connected to the internet
    • Mobile data is enabled on your device
    • Notifications for the Approve App are turned on
    • Your preferred notification setting is enabled in your device (For example, lock screen, badge, banners or pop up style alerts are visible)
    • “Do Not Disturb” mode is not blocking push notification alerts.

You can also open the Approve App to access your Pending Requests. Tap the three dots/lines in the top right corner of your Approve App.

  • What should I do if my device date or time is incorrect?

Your device’s date and time setting will need to be accurate for the time zone you are in or push notifications may be impacted. We recommend that you have the time/date setting set to automatically update on your device.

  • Why does Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) matter for push notifications?

SCA adds an extra layer of protection by verifying it’s really you when approving an activity. Push notifications are sent only to the smart device your Approve App is registered on.

  • What should I do if I receive a push notification for a request I didn’t expect?

If you receive a request that you were not expecting, do not approve it. Only approve a request when you are certain it relates to an action you have performed, and the details are correct.

An unexpected prompt may indicate that someone is trying to access your account without permission. Decline or ignore the request, and treat it as a potential fraud risk. If you are unsure whether the request is genuine, or if you continue receiving prompts you did not initiate, please contact the Helpdesk immediately
