Bank of Ireland Welcomes Irish Government’s Personal Investment Account (PIA)

New accounts can help more people build long-term financial confidence and resilience

6 October 2026 – Bank of Ireland welcomes the Irish Government’s Personal Investment Account (PIA), an important step towards helping more people save and invest for the future.

The new accounts, launching next year, have the potential to strengthen households’ financial confidence and resilience, encourage long-term saving and investment, and support economic growth by making investing simpler and more accessible.

“We are very supportive of the Government’s Personal Investment Account initiative. A simple, accessible and attractive investment framework can help more people grow their savings over the long term, improve financial wellbeing and support broader economic development.

“Ireland has one of the highest levels of household savings in Europe, and these accounts have the potential to give customers greater choice in how they plan for their future. We look forward to working with Government and industry stakeholders as the framework is finalised and implemented.”

How the Personal Investment Account will work:

  • Available to Irish tax-resident individuals aged 18 or over who hold a Personal Public Service Number (PPSN).
  • One account permitted per person.
  • You will be able to invest a maximum amount of €12,000 per year.
  • PIAs will have a tax-free threshold of €50,000. A flat annual tax rate of 1% will apply to the portion of the PIA value above that threshold.
  • PIAs will be available from 1 July 2027.
  • More information is available from Bank of Ireland: Personal Investment Account.
