Bank of Ireland invests €12 million in ATMs and branch upgrades in 2026
- 186 new ATMs installed across 58 branches in the Republic of Ireland
- 17 branch upgrades completed, incorporating neuroinclusive design standards
5 November 2026 – Bank of Ireland is investing over €12 million in new ATMs and branch refurbishments in 2026 as it continues a major upgrade of its branch network.
Of the total investment, €5 million will support the replacement of ATMs across the Bank’s network. So far this year, 186 new machines have been installed across 58 branches in the Republic of Ireland, with further replacements planned over the coming months.
The new ATMs offer significantly greater cash-processing capacity while using over 50% less energy. They can be used for both withdrawals and lodgements, and recycle cash, so that notes deposited by customers can subsequently be made available for withdrawal.
A further €7 million is being invested in branch refurbishments, with neuroinclusive design standards incorporated as part of the upgrades. Seventeen branches have been refurbished to these standards so far this year. Together with branches completed last year and further refurbishments planned for the remainder of 2026, this will bring the total number meeting the standard to 44 by year-end.
Accessibility and neuroinclusion
Accessibility is an important part of the investment in both ATMs and branches. For customers with visual impairments, the new ATMs feature high-contrast screens and an earphone socket providing audio guidance throughout the transaction.
The Bank is also working with auticon, the world’s largest autistic-majority IT consultancy and social enterprise, to make its branches more neuro-inclusive. Features incorporated as part of branch refurbishments include sensory-conscious lighting, low-noise environments and clear, intuitive signage. Self-service areas provide privacy without isolation, while dedicated quiet rooms offer a calm, low-stimulation space for customers who may need additional time or support.
Carpark upgrades have been completed across 11 branches. This includes improved accessibility and safety through new surfaces, parking layouts, accessible and Age Friendly bays, pedestrian and wheelchair access, enhanced security, landscaping and biodiversity areas.
Bank of Ireland has also installed Automated External Defibrillators at a total of 53 branches in the Republic of Ireland.
Alan Durcan, Distribution Director at Bank of Ireland, said:
“Customers use our branches and ATMs every day, so it’s important that we continue to invest in making these services better, easier to use and more accessible. This €12 million investment is delivering newer ATM technology with greater capacity, alongside significant upgrades to our branches.
“Accessibility is an important part of that investment, from ATM features that support customers with visual impairments to neuroinclusive design incorporated as part of our branch refurbishments. These are practical improvements that support a wider range of customer needs, and they reflect our ongoing investment in the quality of our branches and ATMs across the country.”
