Fraudsters sometimes make “cold calls”, pretending to be from a reputable technical support, IT company or bank. They try to convince you to let them take control of your computer remotely over the phone so that they can fix, upgrade, or protect your device. They may ask you to log on to your online banking account or ask for bank, credit card or other personal details.
Bank of Ireland will never ask you to download any software so we can take control of your device, or to move your money to a “safe” account. We will never call and ask you for your six-digit passcode, full 365 PIN or any one-time activations codes sent to you in a text.
- Never let someone you don’t know take control of your computer remotely. Even if they sound genuine.
- Beware of fraudsters asking you to download genuine apps which will allow them to get remote access to your device.
- Beware of fraudsters claiming to be from a real company and informing you that you have a suspicious transaction on your account.
- Don’t give out your personal or bank details to someone who calls you out of the blue.
- Don’t give your Visa Debit or credit card details.
- Beware that fraudsters can change their Caller ID numbers. They can make it look as though they are calling from somewhere legitimate.
- Never log on to your online banking while a third party is connected to your device, even if the caller is very persistent.
- Always log out of your 365 online banking session and never tell anyone your six-digit passcode or full 365 PIN.
- Never transfer money out of your account because someone calls you and tells you a story, no matter what it is.
