We’ve all received dodgy texts in the past, but not many of us have thought about how those messages are created. At Bank of Ireland we’re always looking out for your Financial Wellbeing and that’s why we’ve teamed up with Professor Mary Aiken, a world-leading expert in cyberpsychology, to share her top tips to keep your personal customer account safe.
1: STOP: Don’t click on links that ask for personal details.
2: THINK: Examine the content of text messages you receive from Bank of Ireland and watch out for the most common tactics used by Fraudsters. Remember, we will NEVER send you a text or email with a link asking for your full 365 pin number or your one-time passcodes.
3: And CHECK: the legitimacy of any Bank of Ireland text you receive, using our new TextChecker service. Simply send the word ‘Check’ followed by the Bank of Ireland message you want to verify, to 50365.
Read on to find out how to get inside the mind of a fraudster, breakdown how a fraudulent text is composed and learn what the signs to look out for are.
Personalisation
If they put the emphasis on “YOUR account” or “YOU need to take action” that’s the first signal to stop and think if the message is legitimate.
Timing
One of the fraudster’s favourite tricks is knowing just how to time a scam in order to catch you when you least expect it.
Embedded messages
Take a closer look at the link you’re being asked to click on. Another tool in fraudster’s box of tricks is to subtly echo and reinforce the fraudulent message in the URL itself.
Monetary amount
Large enough to cause you alarm or low enough you want even stop to think about it. The monetary amount used in a fraudulent text can tell you a lot.
Opportunity
It seems like whenever there is a major global event, fraudsters are on it straight away. That’s because they’re agile, adaptable and always on the look out for new angles of attack.
Popular brands
A lot of the messages you get are from companies you know and trust. And cybercriminals will use that trust in their scams to increase the plausibility and likely success of the attack.
Authority
Message from an official body? Must be legit…Not necessarily. More often than not it’s just those pesky fraudster’s using opportunity to their advantage.
Sophistication
Just when we think we have the upper hand the fraudsters keep on evolving, increasing the sophistication of their scams and adding new layers designed to catch us out. Here’s some additional scams to watch out for.
The Parent Trap
Fraudster’s will stop at nothing to get your personal information and that includes pretending to be your child. Make sure you don’t fall into the Parent Trap.
Remember, fraudsters can always change their tactics so these are just some common examples. If you receive a message that seems suspicious – Stop. Think. Check.
And together, we won’t let the fraudsters win.
