Your online payment limits
Some payment types have limits which can be set by the customer to help manage how much can be spent each day.
-
Overall limit €20,000 / £20,000
The max combined amount that a customer can pay on any one day, through 365 phone, online and open banking, is €20,000 for euro accounts or £20,000 for sterling. You can choose to set a lower amount yourself, under Payment limits in the Payments section of your profile.
Payments covered by limits:
- Sending money within or outside Ireland or the UK
- Paying a bill (includes future dated payments, which affect your limit on the date a payment is scheduled).
Payments not covered by limits:
- Transfers between your own BOI accounts
- Direct debits
- Standing orders
- Credit or debit card payments
Features of your overall limit:
- Each payment you make will reduce your overall limit for that day
- Any future dated payment will count as part of your limit on the scheduled date
- Always make sure there’s enough money in your account to cover your payments

Limit for new payees - €1,000 / £1,000 for up to 48 hours
When you add a new payee, there is a temporary limit in place for up to 48 hours. During this time, the most you can pay them is €1,000 or £1,000 per day. This is your combined limit, regardless of how many new payees you add at that time.
Every time you make a payment, you reduce what is left of the limit. You can pay it in one single amount to one new payee, or a combined amount to more than one. This is to help protect you against fraud.
Need to make a higher payment?
If you can, add the new payee to your profile at least 48 hours before payment to avoid the €1,000 or £1,000 limit. If you cannot do this, contact us on the most suitable number below. If there are quicker options to make a larger payment, we’ll talk you through these.

Instant payment limits - max €20,000
Instant payments, known as SEPA Instant payments, are available for EUR accounts in over 40 countries and territories in the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA).
When you set a limit for instant payments, it applies to all instant payments you make online. It does not include payments made to any other BOI account, SEPA Standard or any other non-instant payments, or payments made to mobile numbers.
- You can choose to set your instant limit as either a daily or a transaction limit, but not both.
- The limit applies from midnight to midnight, seven days a week. You can adjust the type and amount of the limit at any time.
- If you do not set any limit yourself, the maximum limit of €20,000 per day will apply.
Daily limit
This is the total amount you can spend each day on all instant payments. The maximum limit for all your combined payments is €20,000 per day. You can set a lower amount under Payment limits in the Payments section of your profile.
Transaction limit
This is the maximum amount you can spend on any individual instant payment. The maximum limit for a single transaction is €20,000, the same as your maximum overall limit. In other words, making one single transaction payment of €20,000 would use up your full limit for that day, and you would not be able to make any other payments before midnight.
