What is a payee reference?

A payee reference is a message you can include with your transfers to help identify the transfer. The reference may include details to help the receiver:

  • Identify you as the sender; and /or
  • The reason for the transfer

For example you may wish to repay a friend who purchased tickets to an event, your reference may be “John tickets”

Advice for paying bills

If setting up a bill we advise confirming with the company if you are unsure which reference to use. This may be:

  • a customer reference or
  • an invoice number

Bank of Ireland credit card reference should always be the long 16 digit number on the front of your MasterCard.

References should include only letters and numbers
