Why we need copies of your ID documentation

You may have recently received a letter / email or phone call from us in relation to Bank of Ireland’s obligations under Irish and EU law on customer identification. Like all financial institutions, we are obliged to hold up-to date identification documentation for all our customers.

If our information for you isn’t accurate, it will affect your ability to Bank with us in the future. Getting your documents to us now will help to avoid that.

What we will need

The documentation we require will be as advised to you in the letter / email or phone call and will be:

  1. Photo identification (in date) OR
  2. Photo identification (in date) and proof of current address, dated in the last 6 months OR
  3. Proof of address only, dated in the last 6 months

The types of documentation that we will accept and the return options that are available to you are outlined in the letter / email you received from us.

We would appreciate it very much if the documentation could be sent to us within 30 days of requesting it.

Please note that failure to provide the correct documents will require us to contact you again in the future.

Using the upload Hub

If you chose to use the upload hub to submit your documentation please have the letter / email to hand before you begin, along with the relevant identity documentation. You will need your customer reference number from your letter / email to upload the documentation.

Please ensure:

  • All 4 corners of your document are clearly visible.
  • The reference numbers and codes on your document must be clear and easily read.
  • Please only take colour photos of your identification documents where possible.
  • Make sure your photo is of good quality and not blurry.
  • Your Photo ID is in date
  • Your proof-of-address documentation is dated within the last six months.

Why are you asking me for this information/ why did I not have to provide it before?

In order to meet our legal obligations under the Criminal Justice (Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing) Acts 2010 & 2013, Bank of Ireland, like all financial institutions, is required to obtain and hold up-to-date identification documentation for all of our customers. It’s the law.

I have produced ID documents in the past; why am I being asked for them again?

We recently commenced an update of all our customer records and have determined that we need to obtain a copy of up-to-date identification documentation for you. Like all financial institutions we are obliged to hold up-to-date identification documentation for our customers.

Will I have to produce documentation to Bank of Ireland on a regular basis?

There may be circumstances where we will need you to provide us with identification documentation in order for us to comply with legislation or internal control policies, e.g. if you wish to carry out certain types of transactions, you may be required to prove your identity.

What happens if I don’t provide the documentation? Can I continue to use my account(s)?

If you do not provide us with your documentation, it will affect your ability to bank with us in the future as we are required under legislation to hold up-to-date identification for all our customers.
